Area Finals: Prizing and Top Cut Format
Following the recent Area Finals announcements, we would like to explain the approach behind prizing and the use of best-of-three matches with sideboards in Top Cut.
Prizing Across Areas
Prizing for the Area Finals vary by area, reflecting differences in qualification paths and entry requirements:
- Japan: Players must earn entry to JAPAN FINALS by advancing through store qualifiers as well as subsequent store area qualifiers, or through qualifying tournaments at large-scale (over 2000 participants) events such as GCG EXPO.
- Europe and North America: Players must earn an invitation through either Regionals, Store Championships, or a Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ).
- Oceania and Latin America: Area Finals are open to public registration, without a prior qualification requirement.
Although these events share the Area Finals stage of the championship, qualification paths, participant numbers, and event schedules differ by area. Tournament arrangements and prizes must therefore be considered in the context of each area’s qualification structure and operational requirements. The approach used in Japan reflects the conditions of its events and cannot necessarily be applied in the same way to other areas.
We recognize the concerns raised about differences in prizes. This feedback will be considered when planning prizing for future events.
Considering these differences and the concerns raised by players, we have updated the prizing for the North American and European Area Finals to better reflect their qualification requirements. Please visit the event website for full details of the updated prizes: https://www.gundam-gcg.com/en/events/wcs26_27_regional.html
Best-of-Three Matches with Sideboards
As we develop competitive play for the GUNDAM CARD GAME, we are evaluating ways to improve official events. Our decision to use best-of-three (BO3) matches with sideboards in Top Cut is part of that process.
This format gives players more opportunities to adapt their strategy across a match, with sideboards adding another dimension to preparation and decisions between games.
Introducing it in Top Cut allows us to assess its contribution to competitive play alongside the practical demands of running an event.
Tournament formats must also account for round length, scheduling, and other logistical requirements. Experience from these events may inform how we approach future large-scale tournaments, together with operational considerations and player feedback.
If you participate, please complete the event survey to share your experience with the format and the event overall.
Thank you for your feedback and continued participation in the GUNDAM CARD GAME.
